The role
To provide accountancy services and financial advice to meet agreed targets and deadlines under the direction of the Senior Accountant. Key responsibilities include maintaining financial ledgers, assisting with annual accounts closure, statutory returns, and VAT submissions, as well as coordinating monthly budget monitoring and variance analysis. The role also involves preparing management reports, supporting service managers, managing cash flow, liaising with auditors, and ensuring compliance with council policies, equality principles, and health and safety standards.
The person
The ideal candidate will be AAT qualified or part-qualified accountant, with at least three years of practical accounting experience. They should possess strong skills in financial analysis, budgeting, and report preparation, along with proficiency in financial systems and spreadsheet management. Essential attributes include accuracy, prioritisation under pressure, and effective communication to challenge and support budget holders. Knowledge of accounting codes and practices is required, while experience in local government finance and full professional qualifications (CIPFA, CIMA, ACCA) are desirable.
